Dry Scalp vs. Dandruff: What’s the Difference and How Do You Treat It?

Dry Scalp vs. Dandruff: What’s the Difference and How Do You Treat It?

Ever caught yourself scratching your head and wondering if those pesky flakes are from dandruff or just a dry scalp? Don’t worry—you’re not alone. While these two conditions share similar symptoms (flakes and itchiness, anyone?), they have different causes and require unique treatments. We sat down with our resident expert Este Tchung (Global Product Manager @ STRAAND), to find out how to give your crown the care it deserves.

So tell us Este, what is dandruff?

“Dandruff is like the uninvited guest at a party—it overstays its welcome and makes its presence known. It’s caused by an overgrowth of Malassezia globosa, a naturally occurring fungus that thrives on scalp oils (sebum). As Malassezia proliferates, it leaves behind an irritating type of unsaturated fatty acid. To protect us,  our body tries to shed off the affected areas but the result instead is an imbalanced scalp microbiome and overactive skin cell production which end ups forming large and yellowish clusters of flakes”

And what about dry scalp?

“Well a dry scalp happens when your skin simply can’t produce or retain enough moisture. This can leave your scalp feeling tight, dry, and uncomfortable, with smaller, whiter flakes making an unwelcome appearance. Think of it as your scalp crying out for hydration—dull, frizzy hair and an itchy, parched scalp are common side effects. It can be brought on from temperature changes, excess heat styling, sunburn, or sometimes from using products that contain sulphates, parabens or excess silicones.

So how can we tell the difference?

While both conditions involve flakes, the key differences lie in their appearance and feel:

  • Dandruff: Larger, oilier, yellow-tinged flakes that often come with a greasy scalp.

  • Dry Scalp: Smaller, whiter flakes, accompanied by a tight, itchy feeling.

If your scalp feels tight and your hair looks dull, you’re likely dealing with dryness. If it’s more oily and flaky, dandruff might be the culprit. No matter the cause, ignoring scalp health is never the answer. Treating dandruff or a dry scalp isn’t just about appearance—it’s about creating a healthy foundation for stronger, longer, and shinier hair.”

So if we think we’ve identified that we have Dandruff, what is the best treatment?

“Well thankfully it’s quite easy to treat at home. Start with a clarifying treatment like STRAAND’s Crown Cleanse Shampoo. Packed with Defenscalp™, it’s designed to combat flakes and soothe irritation. Depending on the severity of your dandruff you may experience relief from the very first wash! But most people need to persevere with their new routine. Generally, it takes up to 3 months to be able to rebalance the microbiome and stop the overproduction of Malassezia.”

Really? That long?

Yeah Sometimes. Be sure to use the Shampoo with the Crown Boost Conditioner to replenish moisture to your hair while not further irritating your scalp.  If you do want to see faster results, incorporate a physical exfoliant like the Miracle Worker Exfoliating Scalp Salt Scrub weekly. It’s full of natural oils and ingredients like salt that help to lift stubborn buildup and allow your scalp to reset.”

Okay, And what about for people with just a Dry Scalp? What do you recommend?

“Same thing really! A dry scalp simply needs hydration—stat! A gentle cleansing routine with the Crown Cleanse Shampoo can nourish without stripping essential oils, while the Crown Boost Conditioner delivers that moisture that your scalp craves. For an instant and fast hydration boost, try the Halo Mask (Halo Hydrator Calming Hydration Scalp Mask), which deeply soothes and restores balance fast. I use mine as an overnight treatment as I do suffer from dry scalp sometimes when being under the air conditioner, or using the hair dryer a little too often!”

Thanks so much Este.

Well, there you have it! Whether you’re battling dandruff or dealing with a dry scalp, the secret to success lies in consistency!  Be kind to your scalp, listen to its needs, and opt for STRAAND’s expertly formulated range to help you ditch the itch, the flakes, and the drama—leaving you with a happy, healthy scalp.

Using herbal natural remedy was what got me tested negative to HSV 2 after being diagnosed for years. I have spent so much funds on medications like acyclovir (Zovirax), Famciclovir (Famvir), and Valacyclovir (Valtrex). But it was all a waste of time and my symptoms got worse. To me It is very bad what Big pharma are doing, It’s also crucial to learn as much as you can about your diagnosis. Seek options reach out to👇👇👇👇 WORLD REHABILITATE CLINIC
